Come along to choose

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

This Saturday will see the official launch of the council’s You Choose initiative in which we are asking residents to vote on how they would like to see a £500,000 community jackpot spent in their area.
The project has replaced existing community grant schemes and is a new way of distributing funding, called participatory budgeting which directly involves residents in discussing local priorities and making spending decisions.
Residents are reminded that their recycling efforts can have a direct impact on the money available for this fund; the more that’s recycled, the more cash comes back to the council to reinvest into schemes such as this.
The official launch will be held at Droylsden’s Concord Suite on Saturday, starting at 1pm , with organisations who apply for money each having a three minute slot in which they can pitch their ideas to the audience. The public will vote on the day to determine the success of their individual projects. I envisage it being similar to TV’s Dragon Den!
I’m sure it’ll be a massive success and will lead to a plethora of worthwhile community projects popping up all over the borough.
Details of venues for the events along with application forms and other information can be found at tameside.gov.uk/youchoose.
